Remedial English Program:

The preparatory English program at IUST is managed by CAP, the ESL division of The Princeton Review office in Damascus.

Program Objectives:

CAP’s program objective at IUST is to provide academic English courses, forming a firm foundation for university-level work. Each preparatory course contains work in all skill areas—listening, speaking, reading and writing. Additionally, English grammar is integrated into each course.

Placement Test:

Each student is given a placement test based on our course curriculum and assigned to a level according to her/his overall score on the test. Students with official TOEFL scores above 500 PBT (173 CBT) are exempted from the Preparatory English Program.

Program Courses:

The CAP academic English courses are:

Level 1: High Beginning
This level is designed for students who need a stronger foundation in English. All the language skills are integrated in this course.

Level 2: Low Intermediate
This level is designed for students with a good foundation in English. All language skills are integrated in this course.

Level 3: Intermediate
This level is designed for students with a strong foundation in English. Emphasis is placed on academic reading and writing but all skills are integrated.

Level 4: High Intermediate
Maximum emphasis is placed on the academic skills necessary to be an effective university student. This course is divided into a Listening / Speaking strand and a Reading / Writing strand.

Assessment:

Students will be evaluated on class participation, successful completion of homework assignments, two exams during the course, a final exam and a final project.

- English 101: 3 credit hours
In this course, students are taught the specific skills, using authentic English material, necessary to read at a university level.

- English 102: 3 credit hours
In this course, students are taught the necessary skills to write an effective academic composition.

What makes CAP’s academic English program unique?

The CAP approach to language learning is efficient, effective and entertaining. CAP is client-centered and celebratory. Students are taught learning strategies to support them in their life-long educational endeavors.
