The
University believes that university life involves
more than classes and books. Hence, a broad and varied
co-curricular life on campus would complement students'
learning experience as well as enhance their cultural
and social development. Hence, the University encourages
its students to organize and participate in a number
of extracurricular activities, under the supervision
and sponsorship of Deanship of Student Affairs, to
promote their growth outside the classroom.

The
Deanship of Student Affairs
The Deanship of Student Affairs is a service-oriented
unit. It provides a number of activities and services
to complement the academic work of students and help
them actualize their full potential. An essential
aim of the Deanship is to help students fulfill themselves
and serve their community responsibly. The programs,
activities, and services sponsored by the Deanship
are intended to develop the students’ talents
and hobbies and to help them channel their energies
into positive action.
1- Athletic activities
Through its Deanship of Student Affairs, IUST students
are encouraged to form sport teams so as to practice
their favorite sports and learn to develop a team
spirit. For this purpose, the University has allocated
part of its land for playgrounds and a Gymnasium Club
under the supervision of qualified instructors to
supervise students and to provide them with the guidance
and assistance they need. The sport activities cater
to all interests and tastes ranging from competitive
sports to basic fitness programs. In their major part,
these activities are oriented not only to train students'
bodies and stretch their muscles. To the contrary,
they aim at teaching students how to function as member
of a team, and subsequently, be able to develop a
sense of competition, leadership and strategy making.
Swimming pools, tennis and basketball courts will
all be available for students to unwind and release
all the tension, while enjoying themselves and making
the most of the time they spend on campus.
2- Social and Cultural Activities
The Deanship of Student Affairs will take care of
organizing a number of social and cultural actvities.
Excursions and trips to touristic sites, educational
visits to museums or to establishments that practice
business in relevant fields are to figure on students'
extra-curricular and field practice agendas. If anything,
such missions aim at enhancing social interaction
among students, and providing them with hand-on opportunities
to explore the business environment.
Other activities also involve the mounting of events
within the campus. For instance, students can have
the opportunity of sharing their artistic talents
and skills with their fellow colleagues through exhibitions
that showcase their works and production. The Faculties
of Arts and Sciences and Information Technology departments
shall hold annual exhibitions to display students'
achievements and accomplishments throughout the year.
Future Interior Designers, Graphic Designers, Architects
and Engineers shall be encouraged to display their
best pieces. This would enrich their experiences and
help them to develop self-confidence and an open mind
to constructive criticism.
IUST is also concerned with stimulating students'
minds and further introducing them to the real world
beyond the confines of the campus. Thus, seminars,
forums, workshops and lectures featuring eminent intellectuals,
scientists and artists will be hosted on different
annual occasions on campus. These educational events
are meant to establish bridges of constructive dialogue
and interaction between the student body on campus
and the world outside. It is hoped and anticipated
that these events would allow students to express
themselves freely, speak up their minds confidently,
and accept and respect others' views while defending
their own with consistent arguments.

Student
Facilities
1- Library
The IUST houses a well-equipped library with core
references that provide students with the necessary
materials they need to consult for their research
and academic work. IUST has acquired books, dictionaries,
encyclopedias, general and specialized journals, and
newspapers that cover the wide spectrum of subjects
and specializations offered across the various colleges.
The University adopts a policy whereby its subscription
to magazines and journals are to be updated and reviewed
regularly to make sure that it has in store titles
that are directly linked to the teaching needs and
research interests of faculty and students.
Books are sorted on the shelves by themes, and students
can always seek assistance from the librarians and
staff members, on duty, who are there to help them
find their way around and answer their questions.
The University offers a wide variety of computing
services to students, faculty, and staff including
access to computers, laser printing, and regional
national and world-wide computer networks. Moreover,
students can borrow materials for a limited period
of time, after which they will have to pay a certain
amount of money for each extra day.
The Library provides individual study carrels for
faculty and students in addition to tables and spaces
for group work.
To ensure continuous access to its services, the library
will adopt a schedule of flexible opening hours during
weekends and late evenings.
2-
IUST Services
IUST is intended primarily as a learning community
in which the student is the centre of its educational
mission.
The University is, thus, committed to enhancing the
quality of students' life so that each student may
experience a worthwhile university life, enjoy a learning
environment that is suitable for his/her individual
needs and career goals, and realize personal growth
and academic excellence.
The
University supports a disciplined community atmosphere
where students accept their reciprocal obligations
for the common good; where service to students is
encouraged; and where a caring community supports
the well-being of each individual.
To
this end, the University supports the following services
that are intended for the welfare and benefit of its
student body:
Computing
Services
The campus is totally wired with a 24-hour connection
to the Internet. The objective is to facilitate research
work and help faculty and students keep posted on
new trends in their fields of specialization. Computer
laboratories are to be available round the clock and
each student will have his/her own e-mail account
and access to the web.
Student
Center
The centre is both the heart of student activities
and a shelter for students seeking refuge after a
hectic day of class attendance, assignments, course
work, and research activities.
The centre provides an open and comprehensive space
for informal gatherings and houses meeting rooms,
pool and ping pong tables, a music lounge with varied
musical instruments, and a cafeteria.
At the centre, students are free to relax over a nice
cup of coffee, to engage in a conversation, to practice
sports skills or to play a musical instrument they
enjoy. Entertaining activities such as concerts, poetry
competitions, fairs, etc. are to be planned within
the premises of this centre in the future.
Sports
Facilities
The University will house sport facilities with the
objective of contributing to the education process
that considers extra-curricula activities as an integral
part of its mission. These facilities complement those
provided by the Deanship of Student Affairs, and include,
in addition, swimming pools, tennis and basketball
courts. By availing themselves of these facilities,
students will have an opportunity to learn and further
develop skills for recreational activity and for their
physical fitness and leisure.
Health
Services
The Deanship of Student Affairs will make available
a Clinic that would offer health care and medication
including dental care, a pharmacy, a laboratory, and
an emergency unit.
University
Post-Office
The University will establish within its premises
a Post-Office to carry out a variety of postal and
communication services for staff and students.
On-Campus
Mini Market
This market will provide the University community
with grocery, stationery, and other items in demand
on campus. A number of kiosks will also be made available
on different parts of the campus.
Transportation
There will be a regular shuttle bus service that links
the University campus with many areas in Syria as
well as with a number of neighboring cities.
On-Campus
Accommodation and Meals
accommodation is availible
in any of the furnished flats in the vicinity of the
University campus.
No
meals are provided at the hostels. However, students,
both males and females, can have their meals at the
University cafeterias, which provide three meals a
day at fairly reasonable prices.
